Chapter 5 : External Events and Singapore
Event : The 1929 World Great Depression
1) Where did the Depression start?
- The Great Depression started in United States, New York2) What happened in US? How were lives of companies and people in US being affected?
- Also known as 1929Stock market Crash, Black Tuesday or Black Thursday, the Depression lasted 10years.
- It was a worldwide economic downturn
- Prior to Depression, there was widespread prosperity and increase in consumer demand when people borrowed money from banks to finance material things such as housing and cars and even invested lifesavings in stock market which was on the rise because it gave fast returns. The ‘bull market’ in Wall Street Stock Exchange saw over-investment and speculation which caused stocks to be over-priced
- October 1929, Stock Market collapsed, share prices plunged.
- Bankruptcies caused banks to collapse. Loss of life-savings .
- Farmers were badly affected because their products price dropped sharply and surplus could not be sold for profit.
- Profit and personal incomes fell, companies collapsed. Unemployment was high and therefore people stopped buying. Life was very hard, people became poor and poor people became poorer.
- Many countries traded with US . Hence Depression in US began to affect these countries which traded with her. Hence International trade slowed down and countries adopted protectionalism which discouraged trade3) How did that affect Singapore’s trade then?
- Singapore depended on international trade for survival. When their trading partners in US collapsed , businessmen and companies lost money. As there was little business worldwide especially in US, trade volume in Singapore declind. Businessmen became bankrupt and companies folded
- When Depression improved trade in Singapore improved too4) How did that affect the life of people in Singapore?
- There was retrenchment and paycut. Unemployment became a serious problem and life became hard for the people. Immigrants had to return home5) What did the British government to deal with the situation?
- Passed laws to control immigration esp unskilled labourCrossword
